In Rutkow's excellent book American Canopy he talks about how Henry Ford explicitly promoted car camping: https://www.amazon.com/American-Canopy-Forests-Making-Nation/dp/1439193584/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2345F9KC3L32P&keywords=american+canopy+book&qid=1675687050&sprefix=american+canopy%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-1

(Here's more: https://www.thehenryford.org/collections-and-research/digital-resources/popular-topics/the-vagabonds/#:~:text=%20The%20Vagabonds.%20Between%201915%20and%201924%2C%20Henry,Firestone%20were%20in%20California%20for%20the%20Panama-Pacific%20Exposition.)

Before the car most of the remaining American wilderness was too far for the average person to reach. Cars were sold explicitly as something that could get you to the campsite to experience nature.
